Language Arts was our subject to tackle today but I think it won - not us.
Battle #1 short attention with cute stories -but not fast moving so VS required many sensory breaks today. 20 minute attention. yikes! Hard to make much progress that way! Even the online stories were dragging.
Battle #2 Confusion about how things flow because I wasn't using the Learning Coach (LC) Guidebook. I don't need no stinkin' book for short vowels or grasping Comprehension - I've got 3 years of speech therapy with VS - early start (significant delay in skill) earned VS 3 times a week practicing sounds of CVC unlike what he liked VC such as ON, OFF, UP....ususally kids learn Go, Bye, Mom...later Dad or DaDa.
Battle #3 - we didn't touch lessons or ideas suggested in the LC Guide - so do we revist this *again* or move on to the next lessons. Decide in AM after I get sense of what VS did learn today.
Victory #1 I limited VSs Handwriting instead using a Labelmaker for spelling simple words like locket; did write some words and letters to keep skill and knowledge in practice, but not nearly a usual amount for a 2nd grader. Just too tiring an effort which invites behavior and crankiness, etc.
Victory#2 hmm there has to be another one - asked for more work: Study Island /Skills for Sucess games) so I'm going to have to *request* more access DAILY to keep VS motivated through the LA and handwriting lessons. Reward for good attempt - less costly than new LEGO sets that's for sure!
Victory #3 During our second sensory break LC hit a HomeRun in Wii Baseball today - first one anyone has ever hit- how I dunno?! Then played 2 more games of 3 player Wii Bowling - VS lost Pro Status in something like 70+ games but LC is so very close to achieveing in a few less games. VS also DID NOT get upset but DID congratulate LC for achievement! Very significant social/emotional progess for VS.
3 Battles + 3 Victories still equaled a very minor meltdown at 5pm - The Witching Hour -But smiles at bedtime with no hassles or stall tactics. And a "Yes I'm liking school at home" at tuck-in; going to adjust The Scheduler to doing one class all-day. I think.
So all in all - one and a half lessons completed for Language Arts in about 3 hours time. We'll see if CA teacher has some ideas or suggestions. VS needs all the LA information just a bit more interesting method!
